The awe inspiring diversity of landscapes of the Wallowa Mountains and the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway in Northeast Oregon are sure to hold a special place in heart.   Wallowa County’s friendly communities are eager to greet you and share this wonderful destination.

Here are 21 great suggestions for “what to do” in Wallowa County. Seasonal conditions may affect some of these suggestions. Refer to listings at the end of this page or contact the Wallowa County Chamber of Commerce for more information.

  • Eagle Cap Excursion Train! Take a train ride through some of Oregon’s most dramatic and beautiful landscapes. Wind through the deep canyons beside the tumbling wild and scenic Wallowa, Minam, and Grand Ronde Rivers (some of our favorite fishing holes!).   • Wallowa Lake & Wallowa Lake Tramway! We invite you to enjoy the jewel of Northeast Oregon – Wallowa Lake – a great place for the entire family. (Wallowa Lake 2 min. video). You will not need to look far for something to do at the lake. Check out Wallowa Lake Tramway – a ride to the top of Mt. Howard (ele. 8,150’). When you get out of the gondola you will have a stunning view of beautiful Wallowa Lake, the majestic peaks of the Wallowa Mountains and the Seven Devils across Hells Canyon in Idaho.   • Wallowa Lake State Park & Camping! Do you like to camp? The Wallowa Mountains has a lot to offer. The Wallowa County State Park has year-round amenities: 121 full hookup sites; 89 tent sites; 2 yurts; a rustic cabin; RV dump site; showers, and laundry facilities. For the person or family that wants to truly camp in the backcountry there are many primitive campsites. Just be sure to check ahead for the current list of open campgrounds.   • Wallowa Lake Marina! Rent a boat for a trip around Wallowa Lake or try your hand at fishing. There are paddle boats, canoes, row boats, small motor boats and a 21 foot Pontoon boat available for your enjoyment.   • Scenic Cycling! Have fun on an easy ride around one of Wallowa County’s friendly towns or the Wallowa Lake area or do a more challenging trip through Hells Canyon.   • For-Family Activities! The are so many great activities for the kids at Wallowa Lake – water sledding, horseback riding, paddle boats, bumper boats, swimming, miniature golf, croquet, go carts, ping pong, horse shoes, video games, basketball & volley ball.   • Farmer’s Markets! Starting June 3rd throughout the summer on Thursdays you can shop for fresh, organically grown vegetables and fruit at the Wallowa County Farmers' Market. The market is open from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm on the Courthouse lawn in Enterprise, and coincides with the free Courthouse Concert Series. Starting May 29th the market opens in Joseph on Saturday mornings from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm at the corner of Main and Joseph Streets. Contact Beth Gibans at 541.398.0707.
  • Courthouse Evening Music! Starting June 5th, every Thursday evening throughout the summer; you can enjoy a wide variety of music on the courthouse grounds in Enterprise.   • Arts & the Joseph Main Street Art Walk! Wallowa County has been called the Bronze Valley of Oregon. Take a tour of Parks Bronze Foundry or Valley Bronze of Oregon Foundry and see beautiful artworks come to life! Wallowa County is home to many fine arts galleries and every one is worth a visit.   • Wallowa County Museum! The museum is located in the city of Joseph’s Main Street in a historic building which once housed one of the town’s first banks. There is an extensive collection of artifacts from Wallowa County’s founding families as well as the Nez Perce Indians who once lived in the area. A fascinating look into bygone times.   • Wallowa Band Nez Perce Interpretive Center! Be sure to stop at this center in the city of Wallowa. You will find photos and information about the Wallowa Band Nez Perce, the Wallowa Band Nez Perce Homeland Project, and the tragic story of Chief Joseph as he led his people from the Wallowas on the Ne-mee-poo trail so they might escape the U.S. Army.   • Sunrise Iron! For a real unique experience tour the Antique Tractor Exhibit on a working ranch located outside Enterprise Oregon. The ranch is based on the slopes of beautiful Wallowa Mountains. Open year round by appointment. Contact Erl McLaughlin, 541.426.4407.
  • Historic Barns and Ranching Heritage! Take a driving tour to view and photograph historic barns and operating ranches of the Wallowa River Valley against the backdrop of the spectacular Wallowa Mountains.   • Driving Tours & View Point Vistas! One of the reasons the Hells Canyon Scenic Byway is sought after by so many car clubs and motorcycle rallies is due to the beautiful drive and the complete package of activities to do once you arrive. Check out the incredible views of the Hells Canyon Lookout or the Joseph Canyon View Point. For the explorer who can take off of the paved roads and do a spectacular side tour check out the Lostine Canyon Auto Tour, Hat Point Scenic Drive and the Buckhorn Drive.
  • Shopping! Wallowa County’s small and unique towns provide an abundance of cottage stores for a full day of unique shopping experiences. You will find an outstanding selection of gifts in Wallowa County’s shops and galleries. Many items are one-of-a-kind and are produced by local artisans. Making choices will be your only difficulty!
  • Natural History Tours! Sit back and relax while your knowledgeable guide takes you on a variety of tours. The Wallowa Mountain Institute (WMI) specializes in eco-tourism. Hells Canyon, Buckhorn Overlook into the Imnaha River drainage, history tours of Wallowa County, wildlife and geology are just a few of the custom-designed tours available.   • Rafting, River Boats & Guides! If you want excitement, you can raft the best of Hells Canyon’s rapids including the famed “Wild Sheep” and “Granite Creek” rapids. On jet boat tours you will enjoy spectacular scenery, wildlife, and Indian pictographs. Maybe it is time for a guide to take you fishing at some of our premier sites. These tours are not limited to the Snake River! There are many wild & scenic rivers in Wallowa County and guides to show you a time you will never forget.   • Outfitters for the Backcountry! Rent a horse, spend an hour and ride up 1,000 feet to a spectacular view of Wallowa Lake or a whole day exploring the high lakes area of the Eagle Cap Wilderness. Better yet, book a custom-designed guided trip with experienced outfitters. Eagle Cap Wilderness is Oregon’s largest wilderness and Hells Canyon Recreation Area is maybe Oregon’s most rugged country.
